There
are probably a handful of places in the Caribbean and Latin America that
are now being called "the best kept secret," but only one of them is also
being called the next Hong Kong and that's the country of Panama. The excitement
over Panama derives from many causes. It's an ecological paradise,
one of the world's largest banking centers, it has the second largest free
trade zone in the world and it's a transit point for shipping. But more
than that, it's an excellent place to live, with fine highways, a pleasant
populace, good schools, great infrastructure, good telecommunications and
plenty of bargain real estate.
Roads and infrastructure are modern and well maintained. This not the third world. Panama is a first class nation with first class infrastructure. Why are Americans moving to Panama? Because it's a first class nation, low on crime, with a low population density that is also the most wealthy nation in Central America. It is a peaceful place with little or no street crime. Real estate is at rock bottom prices. The business arena is one of the most modern in the world. It has a bountiful supply of water, the air is pure and because it is an isthmus there is always a gentle breeze and it never swelters. If you want to live in a perfect place where you can eat breakfast in the Caribbean and have a second cup of coffee one hour later on the Pacific coast there is only one place to do so. There are Caribbean towns where you can buy beach front land and there are mountain towns where you can buy ranches and grow coffee. Panama has it all. Great surfing, great beaches, great banking, good real estate prices and a low population density. There is only one Panama and it's the best spot I know of for anyone seeking a peaceful refuge.
